Lifts Might Soon Have Emergency Toilets
Leave it to Japan to come up with the most unconventional solutions to its problems. Due to the amount of power-outages it has been having due to another powerful earthquake that shook the islands South of Tokyo on Saturday evening, it has been determined that bathrooms must be installed inside of elevator lifts to provide portable toilets and emergency drinking water in case anyone becomes trapped for hours during a power outage.
According to industry officials, people were trapped for up to 70 minutes in 14 different elevators before rescuers arrived. Being a nation known for being dependable and reliable, this was simply not a situation the country wants repeated.
Especially when seismologists are estimating that when the “next big one” hits Japan, over 17,000 people could potentially become stuck in elevators without knowing how long it will take for help to arrive.

How Do Taps Work?
Did you ever stop to think about how your bathroom or kitchen taps actually work? “Water is a fundamental human need. Each person on Earth requires at least 20 to 50 litres of clean, safe water a day for drinking, cooking, and simply keeping themselves clean”. The principle is very simple and effective. Taps are normally constructed from solid brass for a longer life and then chrome or gold plated to add an easy to clean finish. The water pipe is connected to the bottom. Â Water is then held in a chamber until required. When you want water all you need to do is turn the handle anticlockwise which unscrews an internal valve and starts the flow of the water.
Mixers taps work on the same principle but you do need a hot and a cold water supply connected and you will get cold, warm or hot mixed water depending on where you turn the handle.
